5 star vegas hotels - Rat Pack:

Rat Pack: Live at the Sands

Rat Pack: Live at the Sands

"If you wanna hear me sing serious, buy an album," Dean Martin says early in this 70-minute disc, underlining his point by deliberately mangling the last word's pronunciation. Issued to catch the wave of Steven Soderbergh's remake of the Pack's romp, Ocean's 11, Live at the Sands is the second official issue of a Martin/Frank Sinatra/Sammy Davis Jr. show. This September 1963 date, though, is nimbler and funnier than the previous year's set preserved on The Summit in Concert. Some of the same jokes are told, but this Vegas jaunt adds at least one new running gag (Dino's brief rendition of "It's My Party"), and Sammy also gets a few racially tinged zingers off in return for those of his partners. Oh, and lest we forget, there's good music. Martin actually plays it straight on two Guys and Dolls duets with Sinatra, who also turns in a half-dozen strong performances on his own. Plenty of mystique is present, but Sands captures the trio hard at work as well. --Rickey Wright

HELLO LAS VEGAS

HELLO LAS VEGAS

This was taken by my husband in our bathroom at The Signatures of MGM Grand-one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed at. We were on one of the Penthouse floors-37 stories up with a balcony. Such a great trip-can't wait for next year!
One of the rare shots of me-don't like to have my picture taken much. Everything is on schedule with my braces & post jaw surgery-hopefully only another few months.

Balcony of Terrace One Bedroom at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Balcony of Terrace One Bedroom at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Nice sized balcony. This room had a nice view of city center. The terraces are a big part of the hotel's ad campaign and they really differentiate the property. It's nice to have access to fresh air from your room. A relaxing place to hang out, and the views are great too.

Sinatra: Vegas (Box Set, 4CD/1DVD)

The Definitive Vegas Collection! 5-Disc Box Set (4 CD+1 DVD) Features Over 70 Unreleased Live Tracks Of Classic Sinatra, Performing At Legendary Las Vegas Venues Spanning 1961-87. Frank Sinatra, in Vegas is the Sinatra of legend. Disc One features an electrifying performance recorded at The Sands hotel in November of 1961. An insightful bonus audio interview with Sinatra sheds light on the segregation in Nevada hotels that he was battling at the time of this performance. Disc Two recorded in early 1966 from the same run of shows that produced the best-selling Sinatra At The Sands, finds Sinatra performing with Count Basie & His Orchestra (which featured a young Quincy Jones conducting). Disc Three presents Frank at Caesars Palace during a two-week engagement at Circus Maximus in March of 1982. Features Sinatra's duet with daughter Nancy on their #1 hit ''Somethin' Stupid,'' and some good-natured heckling from fellow Rat Packer Dean Martin. Disc Four features a strong performance from an April 1987 engagement at The Golden Nugget. For this show Sinatra's favorite accompanist Bill Miller was not behind the piano he conducted the orchestra instead. Disc Five's DVD features a complete unreleased concert from May 5, 1978 at Caesars Palace including rare backstage footage. Includes a lavish 64-page book with celebrity commentary, essays by noted Sinatraphiles, rare photos, and reproductions of Vegas memorabilia.

Mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel may have laid the physical cornerstones of Las Vegas, but it was Francis Albert Sinatra who gave Sin City its swinging musical soul. Spanning a quarter century, this four-CD-plus-bonus-DVD collection of previously unreleased recordings captures spirited Sinatra shows at the Sands, Caesar's, and Golden Nugget--performances that initially underscore the salutary effect the desert playground had on the singer's muse, then warmly chronicle the autumn years of a triumphant career. A pair of '60s gigs at the Sands (of which Sinatra was part owner) capture an artist still building on his musical legacy in the midst of rock's rising fortunes. The 1961 show turns on the riches of his Capitol years, a musically straightforward set that balances the singer's interpretations of reflective material like "Moonlight in Vermont" and "In the Still of the Night" with upbeat, typically playful renditions of such Sinatra signatures as "Young at Heart," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Witchcraft."
But it's the '66 performance that may be the most intriguing for Sinatraphiles: A live workout with Count Basie and his orchestra that eschews the singer's mid-decade comeback hits--and even material from the recent Sinatra-Basie collaboration--in favor of a sassy set that's less summit meeting than swinging soiree, a freewheeling highlight reel from his back catalog that finds singer and band engaging each other with playful, often dizzy abandon. The anthology's '82 and '87 sets from Caesar's and the Golden Nugget, respectively, aren't nearly as musically challenging, showcasing a vocalist and still-boisterous crowd-pleaser who might have stopped breaking musical ground, yet never ceased reveling in the glories--and laughs--he could still bring to the moment. Rat Pack partner in crime Dean Martin stops by Caesar's for some good-natured razzing, while daughter Nancy guests on the set's lovably ditzy take on "Somethin' Stupid." The bonus DVD captures another unreleased rarity, an entire May 1978 Caesar's gig taped by CBS during a period when the singer had largely retreated from the spotlight. While his voice sometimes betrays the ravages of time on these later performances, Sinatra's mercurial humor and indomitable spirit simply spirit won't be denied. --Jerry McCulley

WTF? I have been making an effort to shop on Magazine for a week and also tried to do some 'normal' shopping at the mall. It was all a complete disaster. I just am not a shopper. Everywhere I go just feels fucked up and surreal. Magazine merchants did not have my sizes or things in stock. I might have to just get my E shop on. I really really tried but I am traumatized and my recipients are rather sophisticated.

SMITHFIELD - DUBLIN

SMITHFIELD - DUBLIN

Smithfield Market was laid out in the mid 17th century as a marketplace, the quiet cobbled area was a welcome breathing space after the hustle and bustle present in the rest of the city. The first Sunday of every month was its 'Busy Time' with the traditional Horse Market. The horse market still takes place, albeit on an informal basis.

The Smithfield area is also home to the Dublin City Fruit Vegetable and Flower Market, one of Dublin's best kept Victorian architectural secrets. The Council recently demolished the adjacent Fish Market building and plan to redevelop the rest of the site.

Debateably Smithfield may include the satellite Museum district to the west and the Four Courts district to the east. These districts are largely residential and combined with the area around Smithfield square they comprise the main Liffey river frontage of Dublin 7

Recent commercial, residential and cultural developments have led to the area becoming newly fashionable in the first decade of the 21st Century with venues like The Dice Bar and The Voodoo Lounge proving a hip alternative to the city centre clubs and Park Inn Hotel becoming increasingly popular as a conference venue as well as for tourist accommodation.
